Snow Patrol
This music video is a video by the artist of the song I am using for my music video, Snow Patrol. The genre of my chosen song is indie/ rock or alternative and the genre of this song is alternative rock, this means that both my song and this song are the same genre and I can relate it to my song and video ideas.
This music video is called Chasing cars. The following information I took from Wikipedia and is based on what the song is all about;
‘Lead singer Gary Lightbody wrote the song, sober after a binge of white wine, in the garden of producer Jacknife Lee's Kent cottage.[6] The song has Lightbody singing a plain melody over sparse guitars, which has an ever-building crescendo.[7]
He stated it was his "purest love song".[8] The phrase "Chasing Cars" came from Lightbody's father, in reference to a girl Lightbody was infatuated with, "You're like a dog chasing a car. You'll never catch it and you just wouldn't know what to do with it if you did."[citation needed][9]
The song was first heard on the band's 2005 Final Straw Tour, when they began playing it, along with two other newly written songs ("Your Halo" and "It's Beginning to Get to Me") they had intended to release on their upcoming album. Since then, the composition of the song was changed slightly, and most of the lyrics were rewritten’

Props
For my music video I will not be needing many props. This is because the location/setting is more important and can tell the audience more than props can. However the few props that I do need are, some fairy lights for shooting a few romantic more intimate scenes in the bedroom, a bed also for the bedroom scenes. I may be using a few smaller props like a rose and pictures of the characters in photo frames. Another possible prop i will need is a park or some swings.

Location
My music video is going to be located in several places. My main location will be in a dance studio where I will have my two characters performing a dance, the dance with show emotion and some of the choreography will relate to the lyrics. My idea of interpreting dance into the video was after watching Pixie Lott’s video Broken Arrow which I analysed earlier on in the year. I found the video brought out a lot of emotions and some of the choreography told a kind of story. I also thought this was a brilliant idea as I love to dance and enjoy choreographing new routines especially when I have a story to tell/show through the movements.
Another of my initial ideas was to have the two characters playing in a field full of corn which is local to me however when I was going to film this the weather worsened and we got a lot of snow although this stops me filming it in the corn field I found another field which was covered in snow which I am scheduled to film a couple of scene in there, these scenes will be clips of the 2 characters playing in the snow together as a couple.
Another of my settings is in Texas here at this time of year they get quite a few bad storms, therefore I want to see if I can capture some storms with lightning. If I am able to get this it will be great as it will relate to my song choice, the song I have chosen is called the lightning strike therefore having clips of lightning will make the video even better. It will also link with the reason why the artist decided to create the song. A third setting I have in mind is the bedroom. I will be using a bedroom of one of the characters as they have a rather dark coloured bedroom and I would like to put some fairy lights up so it will make the room look more romantic. In the bedroom I am looking at creating some scenes which are more intimate between the two characters, these scenes will not be very often or revealing however it can show the audience a side they haven’t seen of the couple yet.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, lyricist Gary Lightbody revealed the song was conceived after he was caught in a heavy storm one night in Glasgow: "I was pretty terrified - 150-mile-an-hour winds, trees falling down. But we went outside the house, and it was also just thrilling. There was this howling wind, but it felt like silence, as if our senses were being too bombarded to cope with what was going on. So the record was born out of that feeling, of two people having a protective shell around each other. I'm not saying there's not darkness in there still, but it's happening from outward factors more than inward. Maybe things are terrifying, but they're beautiful, too. The world is extremely surprising.”
Above are some sentences taken from Wikipedia explaining why the song was written and what the artists interpretation of the meaning is. This has helped me more to understand the meaning of the lyrics as they are quite difficult to understand and some to me don’t have much meaning.

The genre of my song
Convention of my genre essay
The song I have chosen for my music video is The Lightning Strike (what if the storm ends) by Snow Patrol. This songs genre is indie/ rock as well as alternative.
Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980’s. It is a distinct genre of rock music with a specific artist aesthetic, and care less about the context in which it is made.
My song choice does not have an original music video to it that is created by the artist therefore it makes it slightly harder to relate to the conventions of my music genre. However by using examples from other videos they have I can get an idea of what I have to do.
A convention of my music genre is that the song and video is fast paced and usually relates a lot to the lyrics. My song choice is not particularly fast past neither is quite a few of Snow Patrols songs however their videos relate to the lyrics. For example in the music video Chasing Cars the character is laid on a tiled floor on his own when the lyrics ‘if I just lay, if I just lay here’, this not only shows the video relating to the music but it also shows another convention of my music genre which is the video being set in weird and unusual locations as a tiled floor to me is a weird location.
Not all of Snow Patrols music videos have shots of the band, guitars and drums which is a convention of my music genre however in music videos like ‘Just say yes’ and ‘You’re all I have’ do. This tells me that this band don’t always stick the conventions of their genre and they like to be different and experiment with what they do.
The characters in a indie rock music video are not glammed up to be style icons they are glammed up to be rock stars. This means having the whole dark clothing with the distinctive make-up for example when Brandon Flowers from ‘The Killers’ wears eye-liner in most of his music videos, they make videos for the music not to be trendy. However Snow Patrol do not convey this convention in the way most indie rock artists do, they don’t dress up to be stylish they just dress normal as they would in normal everyday life. This shows me that they are not bothered about getting a message about how indie rock dress they just want people to enjoy their music and videos so people are more focused on their music than on their clothing.
To me indie rock artists make things very mysterious, dark and weird. I would not say that snow patrol make their music and videos mysterious however I would say they make them weird and unusual. For example in the video ‘ Chasing Cars’ the character is laid in the middle of the road with people and cars moving around him like what he was doing is normal this also happens when he is laid in the middle of what looks like a train or tube station with people just walking over him like he is not even there, although this is unusual it does relate to the lyrics.
Although I can not relate any of the conventions to my songs choice music video I can relate it to other music videos created by them and then take into consideration how Snow Patrol convey the conventions of their genre in their videos but also how other indie rock artists convey the conventions in their music videos.

Target audience and song choice
My music video will be aimed at men and women from 16-40. This is a very large age group however my artist are well known by many people old and young. They are not a very young group with 5 albums out therefore thats why i have targeted the video at older people as well as younger however they are always creating new songs. The artists of my song is Snow Patrol and the song i have chose is The lightning strike- what if the storm ends. The song is made up of three different parts therefore i am doing just the first part of the song which is called what if the storm ends, the other two parts are called: The Sun Light Through The Flags and Day Break. I chose this particular song as it does not already have an existing video therefore there will be no expectations of how good my video has to be which means i can use my imagination a little more.

What if this storm ends?
And I don't see you
As you are now
Ever again
The perfekt halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet's last dance
Just for a minute
The silver forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow
Now it's found us
Like I have found you
I don't want to run
Just overwhelm me
What if this storm ends?
And leaves us nothing
Except a memory
A distant echo
I want pinned down
I want unsettled
Rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils
I want to see you
As you are now
Every single day
That I am living
Painted in flames
All peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me
That strikes relentless

Analysing music videos
Song: Broken Arrow by Pixie Lott
This genre of this song Is pop/ r&b therefore is not the same as the music genre of my chosen song, however the reason I chose to analyse this music video is that there are parts of the video in which I would like to consider putting into mine.
The song is about someone trying to get over an ex boyfriend we know this when listening to the lyrics of the song, the video connects to the lyrics.
‘What do you do when you're stuck,

‘What do you do when you're stuck,
Because the one that you love,
Has pushed you away,
And you can't deal with the pain,
And now you're trying to fix me,
Mend what he did,
I'll find the piece that i'm missing,
But I still miss him,I miss him,
i'm missing him,Oh I miss him,
I miss him i'm missng him’
This video is a narrative. Pixie Lott plays the role of a woman who had recently broken up with her boyfriend, she is trying to show interest in another guy however when she see’s her ex boyfriend her focus goes all on him. This is what makes the video more interesting as the ex boyfriend has come back on the scene.
Pixie with her new love.

A shot of Pixie’s point of view when she see’s her ex boyfriend. The video starts off with a shot of what looks like a party. Pixie is stood with what seems like her new boyfriend until she see’s her ex boyfriend. Around 15 seconds into the video there are close-ups of Pixie’s face, here you can see the emotion on her face which connects with the audience as it shows how she is feeling.

Just before the chorus there is a shot of Pixie laid out on a sofa this could be something to do with the chorus as the chorus could be pursued as Pixie’s dream. This is because she is dancing with her ex boyfriend and there are shots of her being intimate with him showing that her ex boyfriend is interested in her which is something Pixie Lott had obviously wanted. These types of shots attract the audience and with the imagination then most audience could connect themselves with this video.
